WHOIS

What is WHOIS?

WHOIS is a protocol that allows users to look up information about domain names, IP addresses, and other internet resources. WHOIS is maintained by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a non-profit organization that coordinates the allocation of unique identifiers on the internet.

When you perform a WHOIS lookup, you can find out who owns a particular domain name, when it was registered, when it is set to expire, and who the registrar is. WHOIS information can also include the name, address, and contact information of the domain name owner, as well as the name servers associated with the domain.

WHOIS lookups are useful for a variety of purposes, including finding the contact information for the owner of a particular domain name, determining the availability of a domain name, and verifying the authenticity of a domain name registration. WHOIS lookups can be performed using a variety of online tools or by using command-line tools such as "whois" on Unix-like systems.
